It is my understanding that ammonium tri-iodide is the same compound used in "snap caps" which are small virtually harmless explosive novelty devices. They contain a tiny ammount of this compound along with inert granules. They do not explode unless thrown againt an object with force, or comressed. Clearly, only a tiny ammount would be used as an igniter and would not be on the surface of the device. I understand that I made many assumptions when giving this advice, primarily, that the person I was dealing with was an adult and would exercise appropriate judgement. I did not give instructions myself because I was not sure that would be appropriate, and instead directed them elsewhere to begin their research.
