Fear is the only realistic tactic I know of if you are actually aiming to stop street crimes as they occur. In my opinion, physically apprehending criminals is a dangerous fantasy. Keep your distance and make it obvious to the criminal that he is under active surveillance, through light and sound. The last thing a mugger or vandal wants is to be exposed and the sudden knowledge that they are being watched is enough to set up a crippling doubt; what's going to happen next? Their easiest solution is to run, hence, one crime prevented.
