The only problem with that is that you don't get to select your assignments and have to let people go for technicalities. Is arresting speeders really equivalent to fighting important crime? Is it alright to let a killer walk because somebody forgot to read him his rights in full? Is it within your moral code to evict people for unpaid back taxes? As a freelance crime fighter, you have the ability to go straight to whatever is important to you, and don't have to compromise your principals. Cops do important work, but they also do a lot of mundane junk that benefits no-one except the city or state treasury and they don't always get to pick.
