I've had quite a few pen pals (still currently have one) in prison, and the insider opinion is that prisons are pretty much useless to begin with. People that are genuinely intending to reform will do so on their own, whereas most people imprisoned and punished immediately return to their old life and habits as soon as they're released. It's the main function of primate nature...we live in a closed universal system with finite resources and an expanding amount of people vying for those resources, so violence and theft will always be a natural response. It's the same thing with "free will"...the cost of letting people do whatever they want (and not, say, planting control chips in their head to force them to behave 24-7) is that they're going to violate the agreed-upon "laws" and hurt others. Since being sent to prison is only a reactive measure by society, the only thing stopping people is societal-imposed fear of prison. I've considered getting arrested and thrown in jail on purpose to get over this fear, but I know my family and job wouldn't understand my reasoning. :) Superheroes/vigilantes are just another layer of certain-thinking types of humans trying to impose another kind of "fear of getting caught and punished" on their fellow law-breaking humans. Even though we tend more towards "put the fear of physical violence" than imprisonment, since I think most of us are more of the beat-'em-up-and-leave-'em variety. :) Even when we're hunting people who previously committed a crime and temporarily got away with it, heroes are still a reactive measure. We never act until after the crime's already been committed. ...I totally lost track of where I was going with this. :)
